Context The Department of Justice and Public Safety ensures the impartial administration of justice and the protection of the public interest through the dual offices of the Attorney General and the Minister of Justice and Public Safety. Responsibilities of the department include family justice services, fines administration, support enforcement, policing, the sheriff’s office, adult secure custody, adult probation services, secure youth justice services, victim services, fish and wildlife enforcement and administration of the courts. The department also both represents and provides legal services to the Crown including legal advice to departments, litigation, prosecution and legislative drafting services. The Department of Justice and Public Safety aims to improve public protection and access to justice in a manner that is sensitive to the diverse needs of its clients. Duties This position involves administrative and paralegal duties in support of lawyers in the Civil Division’s Family Litigation Unit, Happy Valley-Goose Bay Office. The Administrative Officer (Paralegal) is responsible for assisting with the effective and efficient daily operation of a fast-paced legal office in the Labrador region. The position involves drafting, reviewing, and assisting with the filing of applications, affidavits, and other legal documents for court. The incumbent will research cases and any pertinent legal information needed to support the legal team as well as interview and take statements from witnesses and clients and pass on relevant information. This position will report to and consult with office lawyer(s) and carry out such other initiatives and projects as may be required by the Family Litigation Unit lawyer including coordination of file disclosure, managing court scheduling, and records management. The Administrative Officer (Paralegal) will provide general clerical/office duties as required within the organization and other duties required. Merit Criteria (What is this?)
